PROFILE: Martin Hughes-Games

Wildlife TV presenter Martin Hughes-Games is one of the UK’s most popular and respected naturalists and zoologists. He is best known for the last nine years as one of the presenters of the BBC’s highly successful live shows Springwatch, Autumnwatch and Winterwatch, which he co-hosted with Chris Packham and Michaela Strachan.

He is loved by audiences not only for his knowledge and passion for wildlife but for his relaxed and clear presenting style, sense of humour and brilliant way with people. He communicates very directly with the viewer providing great content in an effortless way, helping the viewer to feel welcome and involved.    

Martin’s biography

Martin trained as a zoologist and gained a BSc in Zoology before joining the BBC Natural History Unit in 1978. He moved to BBC Science and Features in 1979 and returned to the Natural History Unit in 1988 as a series producer and Head of Development until 2007. Here he produced long and short films and series of documentaries.

In 2007 Martin crossed to the other side of the camera and became a factual TV presenter. From 2009 he has presented Springwatch, Autumnwatch and Winterwatch (BBC 2) as well as producing and presenting from its very first transmission in 2009,  Springwatch Unsprung – an off shoot to Springwatch.

He also presented Hunting Tigers – 10 days in India (in production), The Lion Queens (Discovery), Springwatch Butterfly Special 2013 (BBC2), Springwatch Otter special (BBC2), Springwatch Guide to Seabirds 2012 (BBC2), Nature’s Miracle babies 2011 (BBC1), Autumnwatch 2009 “how do I?…”, and Springwatch 2009 Holidays with Martin Hughes–Games (BBC2).  

Martin loves working with people on screen. His years as a successful television producer give him the ability to help productions with their projects and to clearly understand what audiences want and respond to.

Other Interests and Passions

Martins interests stretch beyond wildlife. He is a qualified rope access technician (over 1200 hours logged working at heights) and a keen climber. He is also a passionate motorcyclist  (he raced successfully on UK tracks for 6 years).

He has just published his first book, A Wild Life, which is an entertaining and informative account of his 30 years filming wildlife around the world, and is now busy writing his second book. Martin has two grown up sons and a 6 month old baby (March 2017).
