To say Louis VI is in a lane of his own is an understatement. Louis J. Butler, aka Louis VI – zoologist, rapper, musician, wildlife presenter and filmmaker, Creator In Residence at BBC Natural History Unit and nature activist from North London who’s created a way of cross-pollinating music and nature that is as galvanising as it is infectiously cool.
It is the relatability in the language and message of hope in his music and wildlife presenting that has been getting Louis attention. Using his unique position as both a rapper/musician and a zoologist, he uses the sound of nature as a new more emotive and culturally connected way of talking about climate change and biodiversity, connecting young people, especially from the diaspora with nature.
With his father’s side being from Dominica and France and his mother’s side being Scottish and Italian, Louis skirts many worlds and he brings that through in his music; letting his “inner geek” shine through his lyrics as both a singer and rapper. On top of soulful thumping beats produced by himself, he also plays a huge part in highlighting the climate justice movement for Dominica after Hurricane Maria hit his home island in 2017.
Louis VI’s last album EARTHLING, earned massive press and radio interest with a 5* review in The Guardian and Observer and 6 Music, Lauren Laverne, Mary-Anne Hobbs, Gilles Peterson, Jamz Supernova and Brian Eno all throwing their weight behind it. The album saw Louis bring in atmospheric field recordings pulled from his time in the natural world; weaving together a love for melody and a multitude of genres (hip-hop, sweet licks of Afrobeat, jazz, funk, electronic), all produced by Louis himself. Storm sounds from the Amazon rainforest sit alongside lush birdsong from woodland in the UK. “EARTHLING“ is full of timely lyrics ruminating gently on questions about individualism, climate justice, race, love, colonialism, capitalism and the state of the nation.
Louis has given keynote speeches at COP26 about the colonial legacy of Climate Change, GEI16 & BPI 2024, made “NATURE” an official artist with the United Nations and Soundsright campaign with Brian Eno, Cosmo Sheldrake and Aurora, worked as “Creator In Residence” at the BBC Natural History Unit bringing fresh perspectives to wildlife filmmaking, attended MOTH (More Than Human) gathering on invitation by and to the Sarayaku territory in the Ecuadorian Amazon Rainforest and will be delivering a TED talk in 2025.
