Geneticist, evolutionary biologist, science presenter
Science presenter Sam McKaylin is one of a new generation of evolutionary biologists working on cutting edge science. He is currently researching new treatments for cancer with the use of machine learning and AI. He teaches adults about machine learning and speaks widely at venues and science festivals. And he loves to inspire children about science.
Sam is an exciting, up-and-coming science presenter. He is one of the faces of Get Set Galactic (CBeebies), a high energy science gameshow for 5-8 year olds and a regular feature across the podcast circuit. He loves any excuse to talk about our skeletons and what makes them so different.
Sam graduated from Imperial College London with a first class degree in Biological Sciences before moving to the University of Cambridge where he studied the evolution of fish skulls. There he found his love for what makes every animal so special — the genes which take them from a single cell to their perfectly adapted adult selves.
Since then he’s used his interest in developmental genetics to try to fix what happens when the process of development goes wrong by leveraging machine learning and artificial intelligence to develop new treatments for cancer.
Sam teaches about machine learning, how to tell stories using digital media, and what makes the world around us quite so wonderful. He’s taught at universities up and down the country and spoken at festivals including the Cambridge and Kew Science Festivals.
Alongside his work as a scientist Sam freelanced in TV production where he fell in love with storytelling, he’s worked at RBG Kew where he searched for stories to tell in their almost 200 year old Herbarium and he ran one of the UKs most popular Dungeons and Dragons podcasts. He’s a well known face in the UK Dungeons and Dragons scene and was a regular cast member with Roll Together RPG.
